WashU Bursky School of Public Health is home to, and affiliated with, several research centers and labs that aim to accelerate efforts to solve problems in public health by bringing together experts in diverse fields to share ideas, skills and knowledge.

Maternal and Developmental Risks from Environmental and Social Stressors

This center aims to improve the health of communities disproportionately impacted by obesity and environmental chemical pollutants by facilitating research and identifying policy, clinical and programmatic interventions.

The Ryan Institute will move evidence into action faster by convening leaders across sectors and catalyzing new solutions with the potential to address urgent health challenges.

Center for Obesity Prevention and Policy Research

This center works to improve the health of underserved populations with research that leads to policies designed to prevent obesity and diabetes.

Center for Public Health Systems Science

This center works on changing systems to create healthier communities through research, evaluation and translation. It does so by focusing on policy and prevention; dissemination and implementation; and systems science.

Health Communication Research Laboratory

This lab seeks to eliminate health disparities by researching and increasing the reach and effectiveness of timely health information, particularly for lower-income populations.

Prevention Research Center

Toward improving community health and achieving equity, this center supports research into behaviors that place people at risk for chronic diseases; and works on the design and implementation of ways to encourage healthy behavioral changes.

Health Design & Impact Lab

This lab engages communities in advanced design to develop interventions and improve systems. It works to ensure that public health programs and interventions can be successfully implemented, sustained, and scaled up to maximize impact.

Center for Diabetes Translation Research

This center is the nexus for a network of investigators translating diabetes research into transformative solutions to improve population health. It relies on multidisciplinary team- and community-engaged science, with the aim of preventing and treating diabetes.

Center for Advancing Health Services, Policy and Economics Research

This collaborative, multidisciplinary center develops actionable evidence to inform policies and interventions that enhance health and health care, with a special focus on health equity for marginalized individuals and communities.

E3 Nutrition Lab

This lab leads transdisciplinary research focused on maternal and young-child nutrition in resource-poor settings to promote healthy growth and brain development. It aims for environmentally sustainable, equitably accessed solutions. xplore our work on how macrosocial forces shape population health, mental health, and data for better decision-making.

Healthier Futures Lab

This lab focuses on three core areas that shape population health and drive evidence-based change: social and economic forces and population health; trauma and population mental health; and data for better policy-making. The lab also explores initiatives including Purple Public Health, a project aimed at restoring trust and renewing public health's capacity to act credibly across ideological divides.

Center for Human Rights, Gender & Migration

This center bridges research, policy and practice to improve evidence-based response to serious human rights abuses. Among the center's projects is the Asylum Support Initiative, which works in partnership with the WashU School of Law Immigration Law Clinic, the MICA Project, and practitioners from the WashU Medicine.
