Public health is at a crossroads. After historic wins like the eradication of smallpox and doubling global life expectancy, the field now faces historically low public trust and real questions about its role and reach.

On October 5 in Washington, DC, Dean Sandro Galea will discuss his new book, “Why Health? What We Need To Think About When We Think About Health“, which offers a first-person look at the reshaping of public health’s role, and the deeper underlying question: what should we be willing to do, and not do, to create health?

Dean Galea will be joined by Katelyn Jetelina, creator of Your Local Epidemiologist and one of TIME100’s Most Influential People in Health. They’ll dig into what public health got right and wrong, how the field talks to the public, and what a smarter, more resilient approach could look like going forward.
