A new Gallup poll found that only 54% of U.S. adults report drinking alcohol. It is the lowest rate reported since tracking began in 1939. Scientists aren’t sure yet why drinking rates are falling, so iHeard STL asked St. Louisans to share their theories. They delivered!
iHeard is a listening project of the Health Communication Research Laboratory at Bursky Public Health. iHeard surveys about 200 people who live or work in St. Louis weekly to find out what they know, believe and care about in regard to health.

Bursky Public Health PhD student Isabelle Howerton is the first and corresponding author on, “A latent class analysis characterizing patterns of intimate partner violence victimization in a Missouri sample of adults enrolled in a substance use recovery program,” published in Substance Use & Addiction Journal. Co-authors include WashU Medicine’s Devin Banks, Hannah Szlyk and Patricia Cavazos-Rehg, all members of the Bursky Public Health secondary faculty.
Lora Iannotti, a professor at Bursky Public Health, is the lead author on, “Pregnancy diet based on ancestral patterns increases growth in subcortical fetal brain regions,” published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Bursky Public Health co-authors include Rachel Zimmerman, Elizabeth Hahn, Gifty Aboagyeh-Mensah and Timothy Zielonko.
WashU Medicine’s Beth Prusaczyk, a Bursky Public Health secondary faculty member, and Bursky Public Health’s Jessica Thein and Bobbi Carothers co-authored, “A social network analysis of rural dementia-related home- and community-based service providers,” published in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: Behavior & Socioeconomics of Aging.
